The city of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the main gateway to this section. Situated on the banks of the River Douro, it displays a varied heritage, from ancient churches and monuments to buildings in contemporary architecture. On the journey you will find Vila do Conde Regional Protected Coast Landscape , just before you reach Vila do Conde itself. There is a marvellous view over the River Ave, here. The next town is Póvoa de Varzim, which stands on a wide coastal plain. The coastal strip that stretches from Ofir and Fão to Esposende is regarded as one of the most beautiful parts of the shoreline of northern Portugal, and has been designated a Protected Landscape Area.
