The route is enclosed within the crater formed by the collapse of the ancient volcano, which was at the origin of the smallest island of the Azores. The aim is to skirt round the lake and some small volcanic cones often associated with the representation of the 9 islands of the Azores. The track is sometimes shared with quietly grazing cows. Regarded as a real paradise for bird watchers who can see various rare migratory birds here, on their way between America and Europe, the Caldeirão is one of the most beautiful and mystical place in the Archipelago.
