Algarve, Cycling and Walking

At Portugal’s most southern region, Nature and landscape diversity, combined with a sunny weather and constant temperatures are attractions worth being explored. We invite you to explore the Algarve and to be amazed with the cycling and pedestrian trails available in this region.

In the interior, the highlight goes to rural paths across the mountains and valleys of the Via Algarviana, fully aligned with nature. This pedestrian and cycling Route goes through the entire region, connecting Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente, making a total of 300 km, divided into several stages that will allow you to see the great variety of fauna and flora of this region and to immerse into local culture of rural villages.

To the west, be amazed with the Rota Vicentina: the exclusively pedestrian Trilho dos Pescadores extends over 120 km by the sea, between Porto Covo and Odeceixe. The Caminho Histórico, which is 230 km long, connects Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente in several stages, across forest paths, village and town trails, and it can be enjoyed by foot or mountain bike.

The Grande Rota do Guadiana (GR15) (Guadiana Long Distance Trail - GR15) connects Vila Real de Santo António to Alcoutim and extends over 65 km. You can explore it by foot or bike across mountain, barrocal and coastal areas, being the Guadiana River its main attraction and offering stunning panoramic views.

Further to the south, you can enjoy flatter bike trails at the Eurovelo 1- Rota da Costa Atlântica (or Ecovia do Litoral), which extends along the coastal line with the tranquillity of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. You can also explore this territory by using a road bike and making a set of Percursos de Ciclismo de Estrada with several difficulty levels where you can combine the demanding distance with climbing and descending the hills along roads with little traffic and a great variety of landscapes.

With such a variety, choosing where to start your journey will be a difficult task. However, we assure you that whichever choice you make, you will get to enjoy the best the Algarve has to offer: landscape diversity, pleasant weather from September to June, renowned regional gastronomy quality, intrinsic hospitality and a level of service meeting the most demanding enthusiasts.
