Dia 5 - Marmelete a Cabo S. Vicente / Cycling

Via Algarviana / Cycling

Between Marmelete and Bensafrim, the route passes several hamlets and the Bravura Dam with its large reservoir is a major feature.

From the centre of Bensafrim, the route heads towards the South west, where the terrain is flat, allowing walkers to quickly reach Barão de São João. A typical mountain landscape once again serves as a backdrop as hills and valleys are crossed one after another along the length of the route. You arrive in Sesmarias along with another change in the landscape - the route is encircled by an extensive agricultural plateau, where travellers can also find the Budens Lagoon. The sea can be spotted for the first time from here!

Right in the middle of the South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park can be found unique coastal landscapes. Grazing is also common in this area, and walkers often come across cattle. The terrain is gentle and has a low difficulty level. The route skirts small rural hills, such as Catalão and Vale Santo, where the Vicentine Route (GR11) joins the Via Algarviana, as well as the Coast Ecovia upon arriving at the EN268, before continuing towards Cape St. Vincent.
