Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is an airy village, with large inviting plazas; it was once called São Vicente de Figueira. Following a decision by Queen Maria II it became the seat of local government, the title that until then belonged to Castelo Rodrigo. A tour around the main church should not be missed. It is a fine specimen with a baroque frontage and an interior enriched with a basket-handle arch supporting the rood screen. The only one of its kind in Portugal, it consists of 26 stones carved in an S-shape, with the exception of the central stone which is heart shaped. It is well worth a visit.
