This Great Route begins at the top and passes through various fajãs that so typify the island. This is considered one of the most beautiful routes in the region as it takes visitors through spectacular and dramatic landscapes. It alternates between the plateaus of the interior, where the volcanic cones that shape the island were generated, and the descents/climbs amid native forests where the scenery is marked by steep valleys and rugged slopes that plummet into the fajãs. The valuable cultural and natural heritage linked with the São Jorge fajãs led to its classification as a Biosphere Reserve in 2016.
